Drive DeVilbiss AstroLite Mobility Scooter Review

At A6 Mobility Shop, we’re always thrilled to see advancements in mobility scooter technology. That’s why we’re particularly excited to be reviewing the Drive DeVilbiss AstroLite, the lightest scooter in the Drive line up at time of writing.

The Astrolite is one of our favourite ‘boot scooters’. In our opinion, this mobility scooter has best in class suspension, most portable battery pack and easiest assembly.

Where most lightweight scooters compromise on features to keep the weight down, Drive have managed to integrate effective suspension, soft compound puncture proof tyres and comfortable seat into a liftable package. The Astrolite is also one of the easiest mobility scooters to assemble and has the most portable battery pack in its class.

If you’re looking for a mobility scooter that offers exceptional portability without compromising comfort or performance, keep reading! This review will cover everything you need to know about the AstroLite, helping you decide if it’s the perfect fit for your new mobility companion.

Drive DeVilbiss: The Company Behind the AstroLite

When it comes to medical equipment, Drive DeVilbiss is a trusted and well established brand. Drive DeVilbiss is committed to research and development, constantly pushing the boundaries to deliver the latest and greatest in various sectors of healthcare and mobility solutions. Their mobility scooters are known for their reliability, quality and innovation. With its thoughtful and effective design, the AstroLite is no exception.

Where the AstroLite Shines: Top Features

Let’s unpack the Drive DeVilbiss mobility scooter’s standout features that make it such a milestone model.

Drive DeVilbiss Astrolite

Easy Dismantling and Assembly

Forget lengthy assembly struggles. The mobility scooter’s cleverly designed dismantling system makes it exceptionally easy to disassemble. In our experience, the Astrolite is among the easiest to disassemble and put back together. You can reassemble the DeVilbiss in a matter of seconds, getting you back on the move in no time.

Where some rival models are fiddly or awkward to connect, the Astrolite just needs guiding into place and clicks together effortlessly. Coupled with its lightweight, slimline design the AstroLite boot scooter is a breeze to transport and store. The narrow footplate means this mobility scooter takes up less boot space than similar models and the lithium battery pack is physically smaller than found on many other mobility scooters (despite packing in a decent amount of miles per charge). The size and weight of the Astrolite battery is comparable to a hardback book and features an integrated handle which is useful to carry on an aeroplane or inside the house for charging.

Ultra-Lightweight and Portable Design

The AstroLite enters mobility history books as Drive DeVilbiss’ lightest ever splittable scooter, with the heaviest part weighing an astonishingly low 9.9 kg. This mobility scooter boasts a very reasonable weight capacity of 120 kg / 18.9 stone thanks to its durable aluminium frame.

The AstroLite also features a dual-purpose front impact bar. It acts as a sturdy guard, helping protect the shroud from bumps and scrapes during everyday use, and it also acts as a convenient carry handle, enabling the scooter to be easily lifted into and out of your car boot.

Smooth, Stable, and Safe Handling

We love this mobility scooter’s front and rear suspension, which ensures a smooth and comfortable ride even on uneven pavement surfaces. All-round suspension is an impressive feature not often found on many scooters in this class. The suspension is extremely effective at improving the ride quality.

The soft compound puncture proof tyres on the Astrolite are an impressive feature. Similar mobility scooters often have hard solid tyres which provide a very firm ride. The Astrolite manages to balance comfort and practicality with tyres that offer a smooth ride with the benefit of no punctures.

What’s more, the exceptionally small turning circle of just 125cm takes the stress out of manoeuvring through tight spaces. The automatic electromagnetic brake system provides reliable stopping power, while anti-tip wheels offer added stability and peace of mind.

Long-Lasting Battery Life

You can choose from two battery sizes: 10.3Ah (airline-friendly) and 17.2 Ah, with maximum ranges of around 7 miles (11km) and 12 miles (19km), respectively. Lithium-ion batteries are known for their lightweight, compact design and high energy density, which means that the AstroLite’s batteries can store a significant amount of power without adding too much weight or bulk to the mobility scooter. As mentioned earlier in the review, the Astrolite lithium battery is contained in a compact portable pack with a carrying handle which is lightweight and portable.

With a top speed of 4mph (the legal limit in the UK for pavement scooters), the Drive AstroLite is perfect for daily errands, leisure trips, or exploring on holiday. Thanks to the inclusion of both on-board and off-board charging options, recharging your mobility scooter between trips is also convenient.

Comfort Meets Functionality

Drive DeVilbiss also prioritised comfort in their design, incorporating a comfortable padded seat and backrest. The seat has 360° swivel functionality, allowing easy transfers from the side. In addition, flip-up, removable, and adjustable armrests provide additional comfort and flexibility to suit your needs. Whilst the seat doesn’t have thick foam padding, it is supportive and comfortable thanks to its shaping and design.

Who Is the Best Match for This Travel Mobility Scooter?

The AstroLite is one of our favourite boot scooters because of its ease to assemble, comfortable ride quality and compact portable battery pack. The Astrolite is perfect for individuals seeking a lightweight mobility scooter for short- and medium-distance travel. It’s a fantastic option for frequent travellers and vacationers due to its low carry weight and compact design, which is small enough for car boots, public transport, and aircraft holds. The 10.3Ah battery conveniently meets airline safety requirements and is the same size as a hardback book – perfect for slotting in your hand luggage.

The Drive DeVilbiss Astrolite is great at manoeuvring through tight spaces, including shops and crowded pavements. While it’s a comfortable choice for indoor and outdoor use, keep in mind that it’s not intended for road use or use on very uneven terrain.
