Stairlift Warranty: What’s Covered and What to Look For

A stairlift warranty covers the cost of putting right a fault that develops in normal use. Most cover both the parts and the engineer’s labour. A new A6 stairlift comes with a two-year manufacturer warranty as standard. The exact wording differs between makers, so read the terms before you buy, not after something goes wrong.

Below, we explain what a stairlift warranty typically includes, what can invalidate it, and the extra questions worth asking if you are buying a reconditioned lift rather than a new one. A6 Mobility has fitted and maintained stairlifts across Stockport, Cheshire and Greater Manchester since 1992, with in-house engineers who can talk you through the cover on a specific model.

What does a stairlift warranty cover as standard?

Most warranties cover faults in the working parts of the lift: the motor, the gearbox, the controls and the safety sensors. Parts and labour are normally both included, so a fault should not leave you with a bill during the warranty period.

One thing worth checking is the battery. Stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries that top up at the top or bottom of the stairs, and these wear out over time. Some warranties cover the battery for a shorter period than the rest of the lift. Ask how long, rather than assume it matches the rest. Our stairlift buying guide covers the other points to weigh up if you are still comparing models.

What can void a stairlift warranty?

Most warranties come with conditions. A claim is most often turned down for one of two reasons: servicing is not up to date, or a repair was done by someone other than an approved engineer.

Everyday misuse can affect cover too, such as going over the weight limit, allowing dust to accumulate in the track or forcing the lift when something is blocking the way. None of this is meant to catch you out. The safest habit is to read the conditions when you buy, not when you are waiting for a repair.

Is a warranty the same as a service plan?

No, and it helps to keep the two apart. A warranty covers faults that crop up. A service plan pays for the routine maintenance that keeps the lift running smoothly. That servicing is often what keeps the warranty valid too, so the two work together. Our guide to servicing your stairlift explains what a visit involves and how often makers expect one.

An extended warranty is a third thing again. It carries the fault cover past the standard period. Whether it is worth taking depends on how long you plan to keep the lift. Treat it as an option to weigh up: ask exactly what it covers beyond the first term, and get the answer in writing.

Does a reconditioned stairlift come with the same warranty?

Not automatically, so it is worth asking directly. Cover on a reconditioned lift often applies to the refurbished parts, not a new unit’s full terms. It can vary a good deal between suppliers.

A6 only fits reconditioned stairlifts that our own engineers originally installed, so we know each lift’s history and can be straight with you about its condition. If you are buying reconditioned from anyone, ask what warranty applies to the refurbished parts specifically, and how the lift’s service history is documented.

What to check before you buy, or before you call for a repair

Ask for the warranty length and what it covers, enquire about what a service actually includes, and check how a reconditioned unit’s history is recorded. Those three questions tell you most of what you need to know.

If you already own a stairlift and something does not feel right, it is worth a phone call before anything formal. Our in-house engineers handle most callouts within three working days, and our aftercare support page covers the day-to-day side of ownership in more detail.
